بنا به استدلال علّی، از آنجا که ممکن است تجربۀ ادراک مطابق با واقع و توهّم علّت مستقیم یکسان داشته باشند، پس این دو تجربه از نوع مشترک هستند. از این چشمانداز، استدلال علّی نظریّۀ فصلگرایی را رد میکند. نشان میدهم که استدلال علّی مبتنی بر اصل «علّت مشابه، معلول مشابه» است. این اصل با اتّخاذ رویکردی برونگرا رد میشود. با این حال این اصل را میتوان به گونهای تغییر داد که با برونگرایی رد نشود. استدلال علّی مبتنی بر این اصل استدلالی معتبر است. توضیح میدهم که این استدلال اگرچه فرض نوع مشترک را نتیجه نمیدهد، اما مشکلی را برای واقعگرایی سادهباورانه پدید میآورد. رویکرد مارتین را در دفاع از واقعگرایی سادهباورانه بررسی میکنم. استدلال میکنم که این رویکرد قابلدفاع نیست. به این ترتیب، استدلال علّی اگرچه فصلگرایی را رد نمیکند، اما واقعگرایی سادهباورانه را در توضیح ادراک حسّی از صحنه خارج میکند.
