هیوم در ارائة رأی خود دربارة منشأ باور دینی، از معرفتشناسی تجربهگرایانهاش بهره میبرد؛ اما پارهای تعارضات درونی آن را نحیف میکند و نظریة طبیعتگرایانة هیوم دربارة خاستگاه دین را از انسجام و استحکام تهی میسازد. بر این اساس، در این جستار ابتدا رأی هیوم دربارة منشأ دین بیان میشود و پس از بررسی میزان تأثیر معرفتشناسی هیوم بر گزارة فلسفة دینی او، نقدهایی بر هیوم وارد میکنیم که بهطورعمده بر ناسازواری این گزارة فلسفه دینی هیوم با آرای معرفتشناختی او متمرکز است. پس از مشخص شدنِ تأثیر حداکثری معرفتشناسی هیوم بر نظر او در مورد منشأ دین، این نتیجه به دست آمد که اولاً بهترین نقدها بر نظر هیوم دربارة منشأ دین، نقدهایی هستند که عمدتاً بر مبانی معرفتشناختی او متمرکز شده است؛ ثانیاً رأی هیوم در این مورد استحکام لازم را نداشته است و در این میان، نداشتن انسجام درونی، نقش عمدهای در تضعیف نظریة هیوم دارد.
