Abstract
The increasing delegation of cognitive processes to algorithmic systems raises a fundamental philosophical inquiry: through what mechanisms does this reliance induce epistemic alienation and the progressive dissolution of the knowing subject’s agency? This study addresses this cognitive-ontological crisis through the metaphysical framework of Mulla Sadra’s Transcendent Theosophy (al-ḥikmah al-mutaʿāliyah). Utilizing a critical-philosophical method, the research draws upon the foundational doctrines of Substantial Motion (al-ḥarakah al-jawhariyyah), Presentational Knowledge (al-ʿilm al-ḥuḍūrī), and the Union of the Intellect and the Intelligible (ittiḥād al-ʿāqil wa-l-maʿqūl) to critique the presuppositions of algorithmic learning. The analysis identifies key alienating mechanisms—most notably the reduction of the fluid existence of knowledge to discrete, static data points—which effectively exclude the subject from the active, internal process of knowing. The findings demonstrate that by intervening in the soul’s existential relation to the act of cognition, these mechanisms obstruct the soul’s intensifying motion (al-ḥarakah al-ishtidādiyyah) and impede the realization of the union of intellect and intelligible, thereby severing the knower from the existential actualization of knowledge. Ultimately, this study posits that epistemic alienation is not merely a functional or educational disorder, but a profound ontological crisis that blocks the soul’s path toward perfection by undermining epistemic agency. By reasserting the Sadraean emphasis on the autonomy of the soul, the research offers a normative horizon for designing cognitive technologies that preserve human agency and existential dignity.
